What is BodyTalk

What is BodyTalk?
BodyTalk is a relatively new form of complimentary medicine that acknowledges the innate wisdom within the body-mind complex. BodyTalk also acknowledges the body’s ability to heal itself, given the right tools. By establishing a communication system of neuromuscular biofeedback, in which a series of “yes/no” questions are asked, the practitioner can call attention to areas of the body where communication has broken down and repair that communication by tapping on the head and on the heart. How long has BodyTalk been around? Who invented it?
BodyTalk was created around 1997, so it’s been growing for the last 10 years or so. It was first created by a man named John Veltheim, who was a doctor of chiropractic and Chinese Medicine from Australia. After recovering from a bad virus when someone tapped on his head, Dr. Veltheimemigrated to the United States and developed the BodyTalk system along with input from various professionals. He now lives in Florida and teaches BodyTalk internationally.
Why do you tap on the head and heart?
Tapping on the head calls the brain’s attention to a specific part of the body. In essence, we’re saying, “Brain, please pay attention to this, and re-establish the communication between this part and that part.”
When we tap on the sternum, the bone in the center of the chest area, we’re asking the heart complex to store the change we just made when we tapped on the head.
So we’re just connecting one thing to another?
Sometimes we’re re-connecting communication pathways. Sometimes we’re helping the body make shifts that the mind has already made. Sometimes we connect more than one thing, and the order is always important. Sometimes the body specifies a certain combination or order of things, like a mathematical formula. For instance, similar to the mathematical formula 3 + (4+7)/237, in which we do the parenthetical formula first, the body might come up with a formula such as Lungs linked to (Left Leg linked to Right Leg) defined by the emotion of anger.BodyTalk Health Solutions
What are the side effects?
There are no side effects. When your chief complaint is something chronic (like back pain that you’ve had for 3 years, for instance), you might feel better initially, then the pain may return before the follow-up treatment, and then be completely gone after the second or third treatment. But you won’t have “side effects” like you would from a drug.
How will I feel afterwards?
That depends on you, and on what we do in a session. Some people feel very energized by a BodyTalk session. Some people feel really tired afterwards. Some people don’t feel anything.
Since everyone is unique, and since everyone’s treatment will be custom-tailored to what their body needs at that time, each BodyTalk session is very different. Some last 45 minutes. Some last 15 minutes. It depends on what changes your body is able to make in a given period of time. Sometimes people notice that their symptoms seem to get a little exaggerated after the first session, but improve dramatically after the follow-up. This can be attributed to underlying causes. Once the first session uncovers the “real” problem, that problem is exposed and can be completely alleviated when the body is ready to come back for the second treatment.
It usually takes about a week for the treatment to unfold, so if you don’t feel anything immediately after the treatment, give yourself a little time.
Do I have to take off my clothes?
No, you can stay fully clothed during a treatment if you wish. However, it is recommended that you wear loose-fitting clothing and refrain from wearing underwire bras. Please take off jewelry, watches, and electronics (cell phones, pagers) before beginning your first session.
So what can BodyTalk actually do?
In addition to balancing energy meridians like Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine-and generally bringing balance to the body-BodyTalk can do some pretty interesting things. For instance, BodyTalk can restore communication between organs, between organs and endocrine glands, or between organs and body parts. A good example of this is when someone has a bad cough and they come in for a BodyTalk session, and then the link of “Spleen to Lungs” comes up. This link often stops cough and clears phlegm. Or if someone has had the stomach flu, usually there is a “Stomach to Large Intestine” link that comes up. This link often harmonizes the digestion and brings the appetite back. www.bodytalkhealthsolutions.com

What are “Cortices”?
Cortices refers to the cortex of the brain, the outer layer that covers our whole head just below the skull. The cortex of the brain has to do with thinking, processing, evaluating, creating, and organizing. Divided by the corpus callosum, the left brain controls linear thought while the right brain does the creative thinking. Enhancing left and right brain communication helps us think and process more clearly.
“Cortices” is a technique in BodyTalk designed to enhance the communication between left and right brain. The practitioner contacts both sides of the client’s head with one hand while tapping first on the top of the head and then on the sternum. Doing cortices also seems to have a great effect on insomnia, sleeplessness, ADD/ADHD symptoms, and brain fog. It focuses the mind and gives a general sense of well-being and calmness.
I have fibromyalgia. Does BodyTalk help with that?
BodyTalk has many applications, and can help with any problem or disease. BodyTalk does not diagnose or treat any illness. The practitioner relies on the guidance of the body’s natural wisdom to locate the weakened lines of communication and find the proper order in which they are to be addressed.
Just as the body heals a wound with a particular sequence of chemical reactions, the body wants to address all healing in a certain order. This concept is important in the balancing process to initiate the body’s ability to heal itself. The healing process usually follows rather quickly.
In my first BodyTalk session, it seemed like you were just lifting up my arm. How can that possibly tell you about my health?
The way that practitioners communicate with your innate wisdom is through a subtle form of muscle checking called neuromuscular biofeedback. The practitioner gently lifts up on your arm or hand after asking a question in her head. If the answer to that question is “no,” then there will be a certain degree of tension in the wrist. If the answer is “yes,” either the wrist will clearly break at the wrist crease or the hand will lift visibly from the body.
This is probably the hardest part of BodyTalk to understand and believe. However, if you (as the client) tune into your hand during a BodyTalk session, you’ll feel the difference-without knowing what the practitioner is asking.
Remember, this is energy medicine. As such, we communicate with your body-mind complex on a deep level. We observe the changes that your body-mind is incorporating, and change happens as we observe it.Jeannie Elmstrom is the Owner of BodyTalkHealthSolutions.
